The Silk Mill

The Silk Mill is a small, family-run business founded in 2001, specialising in silk embroidery threads. We created an exclusive range of silk threads to cater for a niche market that we felt was out there waiting for such a product. The silk is imported from China and is made to our exact specification. We started with 500 shades and are now excited to have reached a total of 700 shades!

The idea for the Silk Mill grew from frustration at trying to find decent thread in a wide range of colours for doing needlepoint. I experimented with silk, and although the thickness was not correct, I fell in love with the sheen and subtlety of silk. Nothing else would do!

After much investigation I was able to negotiate with a company in China who were prepared to meet my exact requirements and produce the silk just as I wanted it. After a few false starts, together we created the perfect silk thread for needlepoint and embroidery. But it required such large orders that I realised I would have to share it with other needlework enthusiasts for production to be viable. So the idea to start an online business evolved. At the time I was living in a renovated water mill so The Silk Mill seemed like the perfect name for our new company.

The silk is 100% pure Chinese monofilament silk, imported from China where it is hand dyed to our own specifications. We have chosen each colour and named it, often finding inspiration from flowers, and food or family experiences. Over the years we have also started selling needlepoint designs and vintage needlework items. Designing my own needlepoint tapestries started off as a hobby, but soon friends were asking for the designs and the silks to go with them, so we decided to add them to the website and have been overwhelmed at the response so far. In addition, we have added some fine art and folk art designs.

Collecting vintage needlework tools and ephemera has been a long standing interest. Eventually they were added to The Silk Mill inventory too – before they took over the house! So now The Silk Mill stocks silk, silver and pewter needlework tools, vintage tools and other interesting needlework related items such as very old embroidery patterns.

Our colours correlate with most major yarn companies (DMC, Anchor, Kreinik) so designs using patterns made using all major brands can be worked in our silks.

We hope that our silks and other needlepoint items bring you as much as pleasure and delight as they have done for us over the years. The passion for silk is one that lasts a lifetime!
