The Silk Mill is a small, family-run business founded in 2001, specialising in silk embroidery threads. We created an exclusive range of silk threads to cater for a niche market that we felt was out there waiting for such a product. The silk threads are imported from China and hand dyed to our exact specifications. We started with 500 shades and have now expanded our range to over 700 shades, with plans in the pipeline for even more this year!
The Silk Mill was created by Wendy, an avid stitcher and silk fanatic. After experimenting with silk thread, she fell in love with the sheen and subtlety of silk and there was no going back!
With only a limited colour range easily available, Wendy had the idea to create an entirely new range. Produced in China to her exact specifications, the perfect silk thread for needlepoint and embroidery in a fantastic range of colours was created.
After years of running the business with only the help of husband John, more family members have now been recruited! Daughter Georgie takes care of contact with customers and social media, and her graphic designer husband Marco is the creative genius behind the new website. We love it and hope you will too. During extra busy times of the year it’s all hands on deck – no family member is safe, not even the tiny ones! So here we are nearly 20 years on, relocated to France and still going strong!
Our silk is 100% pure Chinese monofilament silk, imported from China where it is hand dyed to our own specifications. We have chosen each colour and named it, often finding inspiration from flowers, from nature and food or family experiences. From Banderas Bay Blue and Quetzal Green to Wild Rose and Pink Gin, each shade name has a story behind it, making our products personal and unique. Many of the names will help you to visualise the colour.
